Smiling in the face of adversity

It is hard to imagine how it must feel to be told that you are suffering from a life-threatening illness. It is almost impossible to predict how you would react, but the thought of undergoing lengthy, often unpleasant treatment is incredibly daunting – especially if you are only young.

Occasionally, though, we hear stories about young people who, despite their own battles with illness, display incredible acts of bravery, selflessness or generosity and those stories can set an example to us all.

Take for instance the story of seven-year-old Mason Fountain from Ipswich in Suffolk, England, who, while enduring 20 months of chemotherapy to treat his own brain tumour, used the social network to launch a charity to raise money for other young people who have brain tumours. Within just a few weeks, gathered over 7,250 followers and had the support of celebrities like singer Peter Andre and actor and comedian Ricky Gervais.

Mason plans to use some of the money raised through his charity to fund visits to meet other children with brain tumours and to buy them presents. He wants, he says, to make them smile and help them to stay positive and not lose hope.
